THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING
Today is the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the Universal King. It is the final Sunday in the Liturgical Year and next Week is Advent Sunday when the Liturgical cycle will begin again. As in Advent, so now, today, we look to the end of time when Our Lord and Saviour will come again with power and great glory to judge the living and the dead. We also remember the end of our personal time when we shall be judged by that same Lord. Either of these events could happen at any time God wills and so we need to be prepared always. Furthermore, we need to remember that we are subjects of the Divine King and are required to build up His Kingdom on earth by works of charity towards God and neighbour. Perhaps the questions we should be asking ourselves today are:
What am I doing to build Christ’s Kingdom on earth? Am I zealous for souls? Do I proclaim Jesus Christ and His Kingdom?
Am I prepared for Christ’s Second Coming as Judge?
NOVEMBER – MONTH OF THE DEPARTED
There are envelopes at the back of the church for your use should you wish to have the Holy Mass said for departed relatives and friends during the month of November. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which makes Calvary present on our altars, and takes away our sins, is the most beautiful, most powerful and efficacious gift we can ever offer the faithful departed. The redemptive life-giving fruits of Calvary are applied to each departed soul. It is a soothing balm for them and assists them in their journey through purgatory into the Presence of God. Please place your names and Mass offering in the envelope provided. During the month of November and part of December, thirty masses will be said for those on our parish dead list, and their names will remain on the Altar throughout November. Grave lights should be placed on graves, and the Faithful are encouraged to visit the cemetery and in charity assist the souls of the Faithful Departed through prayers, supplications and the traditional suffrages found in the Simple Prayer Book and other books of Catholic Devotions. A Plenary Indulgence can be obtained and applied to the Faithful Departed by visiting a church or cemetery and praying one Our Father, One Hail Mary, and One Glory be…as well as praying for the Sovereign Pontiff . The “de profundis” (Psalm 129/130) together with the prayers and suffrages for the Faithful Departed can be found in the Simple Prayer Book in church.
THE PATRONAL FEAST OF SAINT BIRINUS, APOSTLE OF WESSEX
On Wednesday 5th December, we celebrate the Patronal Feast of our beloved Saint Birinus. He was sent by Pope Honorius I to England in AD 634, and he baptized King Cynegils of Wessex in the River Thame running through our garden. He brought the Catholic Faith to this part of our country and the Church is still here after many vissisitudes in our long history.
Saint Birinus still protects our parish and helps us with his prayers and patronage. There are many who can tell of the efficacy of his prayers. It is right that we, the only parish dedicated to him in our country, should celebrate his feast with proper solemnity and style. There will be a traditional Latin HIGH MASS at 7.30pm. Our wonderful Davey Consort, under the direction of Ryan Wigglesworth, will sing the Spatzenmesse by Mozart. Fr Stephen Morrison, O.Praem., will preach,
And after the Mass there will be a parish party in the Presbytery. Please make a note of the date and time and make every effort to attend so that you can give due honour to our great Saint Birinus.
BOOKS IN THE PORCH
Fr Jerome Bertram’s short history of our parish “DORCHESTER CATHOLICS” has been published, and can be purchased at the back of the church for £5. Copies of the very successful PARISH COOKBOOK can also be purchased for £5. Both would make excellent presents. There are also copies of WALK WITH ME – An Advent Journey. Please take one to assist your keeping of a good Advent and spiritual preparation for Christmass.
